Coll y Toste hospital in Arecibo triples its rate of early administration
of antibiotics for patients arriving with pneumonia: Dr Cayetano
Coll y Toste hospital increased initial antibiotic dose administration
within 8 hours of hospital arrival for dual Medicare-Medicaid beneficiaries
from 33.3% at baseline to 100% compliance at re-measurement. This
quality improvement project was undertaken by the hospital in a partnership
that lasted for 18 months (June 1, 2001 to November 30, 2002), with
QIPRO, the QIO for Puerto Rico. Interventions targeting Medicare-Medicaid
beneficiaries included the use of posters with recommendations, flow
charts, staff education, use of care pathways and physician standing
orders, and monthly visits to present case studies.
