Success Stories: NEVADA

  • As part of its participation in the Hospital Quality Initiative and Get With The Guidelines program, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno , Nevada attended quality improvement training sessions sponsored by HealthInsight, the state’s QIO, to learn techniques to improve quality and reduce heart attack mortality rate. Since 2002, the hospital has increased the number of heart attack patients getting aspirin at arrival from 89% to 100%; the percent of heart patients getting aspirin at discharge from 89% to 99%; and the percent of eligible patients getting a beta blocker at arrival from 64% to 98%. Between April 2003 and March 2004, Saint Mary’s reduced its heart attack death rate by 50%,

  • St. Rose Dominican Hospitals – Rose de Lima and Siena Campuses in Henderson , Nevada collaborated with the state’s QIO, HealthInsight, and other community partners to develop a multidisciplinary approach to ensure cardiac care excellence. Both St. Rose campuses achieved 100% performance on the beta-blocker and aspirin quality indicators for discharges though June 30, 2005 , resulting in significant reduction in death for heart attack patients.

  • HealthInsight also helped the Siena Campus of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals in Henderson , Nevada to improve the rate of prophylactic antibiotic administration within one hour prior to surgical incision by 31%. Timely antibiotic administration can significantly decrease changes of surgical infections.

  • At MountainView Hospital in Las Vegas , Nevada , HealthInsight helped revise the facility’s vaccine process, shifting to a pharmacy-driven protocol, which resulted in more patients being immunized in one month than in the previous year. Mountain View has maintained this success (started in 2003) and now shares their progress and system changes with other hospitals both in Utah and Nevada.

  • Saint Mary’s Home Care Services in Reno , Nevada worked with HealthInsight, the state’s QIO to further reduce their already low hospital admission rate for home care clients. In September 2005, Saint Mary’s implemented a new process to coordinate patient care directly from the hospital to improve safety in the home and decrease the likelihood that the patient has to be readmitted. From the start of the program to November 2005, the agency improved in the percentage of patients admitted to the hospital from 25.4% to 24.8%.

  • Regent Care Center in Reno , Nevada attended Nursing Home Quality Initiative training conducted by HealthInsight, the state’s QIO, and received one-on-one support to increase staff morale and improve management of chronic pain. In one year, the facility’s chronic pain rate decreased from 16% to 3%.

  • Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City , Nevada is working with HealthInsight to change the culture of the nursing home from institutional to more resident-centered. In order to help build strong relationships between their residents and staff, the VA Home implemented consistent resident assignments on specified care units and helped foster nurturing and healthy living environments by including their residents in discussions called Learning Circles, where residents are encouraged to listen and speak from the heart. Employees are encouraged to build a sense of community and create a home-like environment enabling greater self-determination and personal growth for residents while creating a warm, satisfying workplace.

  • HealthInsight, the QIO for Nevada , partnered with Henderson Healthcare Center as part of the National Nursing Home Improvement Collaborative. Henderson Healthcare Center reduced the incidence of facility-acquired pressure ulcers by more than 50 percent after participating in the initiative.
