Success Stories: KENTUCKY

  • Health Care Excel of Kentucky (HCEK) worked with local providers to reduce disparities in use of mammography between women aged 50 to 69 years living in Eastern Kentucky and other rural and urban women. Providers, from health departments to radiologists, participated in provider education on best practices and patient education on the importance of mammograms. HCEK used billboards, newspaper advertising, and posters for providers offices to reach Eastern Kentucky residents directly. This project led to a reduction in the disparity rate.

  • Health Care Excel of Kentucky, the state’s QIO, worked with the Kentucky Cancer Program and the office of Kentucky First Lady Glenna Fletcher, to design birthday cards for women aged 50-67 reminding them to schedule a mammogram. In 2004, 72,500 cards were mailed; in 2005, due to overwhelming response to the initial mailing, the First Lady’s office requested the QIO increase the mailing to 85,000 cards.

  • Working with Health Care Excel of Kentucky, the state’s QIO, Monroe County Medical Center Home Health staff improved their care in the transferring of patients between care settings from 22.4% to 73.4%.
