Surgical Infection Prevention Success in Hawaii
In Hawaii, significant improvement occurred in the measure of administering antibiotic prophylaxis within one hour of incision. Baseline data from 1 st and 2 nd quarter of 2001 showed the antibiotic prophylaxis given within the one-hour timeline at only 47.9 percent. Data from 1 st quarter 2004 showed an increased to 73.4 percent.
In January 2003, 14 acute-care hospitals attended Mountain-Pacific Quality Health Foundation’s conference, Surgical Infection Prevention Collaborative. A mini-collaborative was created immediately after the conference, and many Hawaii hospitals worked to improve their surgical infection care. The mini-collaborative continued over one year through the use of WebEx learning sessions, teleconferences, and list serve discussions.
