Surgical Infection Prevention: Success Stories

GEORGIA

Georgia Surgical Infection Prevention Collaborative Results

Nine Georgia hospitals doubled the number of cases between surgical infections through their participation in the Surgical Infection Prevention Collaborative Georgia held between July 2003 and May 2004.

Houston Medical Center of Warner Robins, Ga., increased from 12 percent to 99.1 percent the proportion of surgical patients receiving prophylactic antibiotics within one hour prior to surgical incision and boosted from 47.6 percent to 86.8 percent the proportion of surgical patients receiving appropriate prophylactic antibiotics.

The Collaborative was led by gmcf, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Georgia, under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
