Surgical Infection Prevention: Success Stories

Georgia Surgical Infection Prevention Collaborative Results
Nine Georgia hospitals doubled the number of cases between surgical
infections through their participation in the Surgical Infection Prevention
Collaborative Georgia held between July 2003 and May 2004.
Houston Medical Center of Warner Robins, Ga., increased from 12 percent
to 99.1 percent the proportion of surgical patients receiving prophylactic
antibiotics within one hour prior to surgical incision and boosted from
47.6 percent to 86.8 percent the proportion of surgical patients receiving
appropriate prophylactic antibiotics.
The Collaborative
was led by gmcf, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for
Georgia, under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services.
