Surgical Infection Prevention: Success Stories
ALASKA
Hospitals show improvement after participating in statewide collaborative
The Alaska Surgical Infection Prevention (SIP) Collaborative began on February 22, 2003 and ended with an Outcomes Congress on November 14, 2003. Seven Alaska hospitals participated with an emphasis on the indicator of prophylactic antibiotics administered in a timely manner. Self reported results for two of the seven participating hospitals are listed below:

Another direct result from the Collaborative is all 10 eligible hospitals in the state (3 urban and 7 rural) are now addressing all of the performance measures. These measures include improving selection and timing of prophylactic antibiotics, maintaining normothermia, providing supplemental oxygen, and not shaving the surgical site.
The Collaborative was led by Qualis Health, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Alaska, under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Qualis Health is continuing to work with hospitals statewide to improve quality of care and to continue to decrease their rates of surgical infection.
