February 23
- Keynote
Address by Don Berwick, MD, President and
CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement ( IHI ) and one of
the nation's leading authorities on health care quality and improvement
issues. A clinical professor at Harvard Medical School , Dr. Berwick
serves on the governing Council of the Institute of Medicine.
- Plenary Address by William Rollow, MD, head
of the quality improvement group at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services ( CMS ). Dr. Rollow will discuss projected work of Medicare
Quality Improvement Organizations (QIO), 2005-2008.
- Breakout Sessions: Officials from CMS discuss
forthcoming QIO efforts, including work with underserved and rural
populations; validation of hospital reporting on quality of care; handling
of Medicare beneficiary complaints, and plans for expanded QIO communication
efforts.
- Sixth Annual Healthcare Quality Improvement Awards Dinner -
sponsored by the James Q. Cannon Memorial Endowment .
Thursday, February 24
- Keynote
Address by John C. Nelson,MD,
president of the American Medical Association.
- AM Breakout Sessions: Officials from CMS discuss
quality improvement goals and QIO efforts for 2005-2008 in hospitals,
nursing homes, home health, and physician offices.
- PM Breakout Sessions: Experts discuss a range of
issues including: creation of Regional Health Information Networks;
models for improving hospital quality performance; case studies of
electronic health records in long-term care and post-acute care; improvement
in cardiovascular clinical outcomes; and building partnerships that
advance quality improvement.
Friday, February 25
- Plenary
Session: Health Information Technology ( HIT ), featuring
addresses by David Brailer, MD, national coordinator
for HIT at the Department of Health and Human Services, and Janet
Marchibroda, head of the e-Health Initiative.
- Plenary
Session: Duke University Cardiologist Eric Peterson presents
new studies showing that adherence to national guidelines for treating
potential heart attacks saves lives.
- Breakout
Sessions: Topics include: preparing physician
offices for use of HIT ; changing organizational culture to improve
heart care; the role of communications in creating an environment for
quality; results of breakthrough series collaboratives on pain management,
surgical care improvement and other clinical topics.
